a clean well lighted place re-redux

When I finally quit this messenger shit, once and for all, I’m going to open a bike shop. A big bright historic space with huge store front windows and high ceilings and wood floors. With passive solar heating in the winter, and well placed shade in the summer. I’m going to work there all the time, six or seven days a week. The shop will be beautiful, stocked with every bike tool ever invented. French, Italian, Japanese, you name it, I will have it, hung neatly on the shop walls. Everything in its place. A place for everything. I will have two Campagnolo Cork Screws with Cherry handles. I will have seven different kinds of bike tool bottle openers. I will have four brands of headset presses. The 3000 square foot work space will have work stands and tools for 5 full-time mechanics, so I can work on 5 of my bikes all at once. Two air compressors enclosed in sound proof cases. Truing stands bolted down to work benches 42.5 inches off the ground. I will have two Phil Wood spoke cutters/threaders. There will be cement floors and drains built in so I can hose it all down when the kegs overflow or the chainlube explodes or the cat pukes or the shit hits the fan. I will have shop dogs and shop cats. The bike book library will be monumental. The furniture will be well designed, attractive, comfortable and functional. There will be no non-dairy creamer. The coffee will be good. The beer will be cold. There will be wholesale accounts with everyone and everyone. Paul, Phil, Chris, Grant, Brooks, Mavic, Moots, Sachs, Sidi, Swobo. For me and my friends of course.

I will be at work all the time. I’ll show up 5:30am, or 3:00pm, or not at all. I’ll spend the night. I’ll stay for two weeks straight. Or take a week off if I feel like it. However, the shop will not be open to the public. The sign on the door will say “closed”, and if you flip it over it‘ll say “closed”. I’ll also have a large neon CLOSED sign, and it’ll be on all the time, like a beacon of freedom constantly sending its message, at all hours of the day and night. I’ll be in there working hard on my own bikes. Or on poetry, free lance writing, silk-screening, carpentry, cooking breakfast, pondering or drinking beer and pondering. The shop hours will not be posted. The phone will not be connected, so people cannot call and ask about the shop hours. And there will not be any employees because I won’t need any. This will eliminate any potential human relations issues, staff meetings, communication failures, personality problems, scheduling conflicts, and all the junior-high shit that goes along with trying to run a business with employees. Fuck that.

I will be in the shop but I won‘t be selling anything. Retail bullshit will not enter my sphere of existence. The windows will have incredible displays of bicycle art and elegant simple functional bikes because I like window displays. And I’ll spend hours creating them for my own enjoyment, not to attract customers. I‘ll be in the shop, reading the NY Times, listening to Miles Davis, or the White Stripes, or the Minute Men, or Bob Mould, or Guided by Voices, or Modest Mouse, or Guns n Roses or NPR and drinking coffee and beer and beer and coffee. Customers with stupid questions or flat tires or sheepskin seat covers or cracked carbon fiber forks can knock on the door all day long and I might even notice them between Hüsker Dü songs playing on the Bose Wave Radio, but probably not, and if I do, I’ll give them a half smile then get back to my work. My work as a sole proprietor and my work drinking beer and pondering.

The back door will be unlocked and open whenever I am in the shop and friends can stop by and bring their dogs and work on their bikes and add or subtract to the cold beer in the double wide Sub-Zero fridge or hit the bottomless pot of black coffee. The shop will include a beautiful stainless steel commercial sized kitchen. And a sleeping loft and an amazing bathroom with more magazines than a news stand, and I will not have to worry about customers fucking it up, because there will not be any customers.

A few days before the new year, I caught an early morning ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island, and drove toward the northwest corner of Washington along the Strait of Juan De Fuca.

This spot's about 100 miles inland from the western coast of Washington. The swell out on the coast was around 10-12 feet, but a bit in the wrong direction.

I did find this great little sandbar farther up the road in Callahm bay, and surfed it all by myself for over an hour until the wind picked up.

La Push

This is The Dump, in Neah Bay. It's on the edge of the Makah Indian reservation. It'e both the reservation's dump, as well as the world's sketchiest parking lot for people wanting to surf the great reef wave of the same name half a mile down a steep hill from there.

Cape Flattery. The most northwestern point in the continental US. Boingo!

NEW WHIP!

Around new year's I suddenly got an all-consuming urge to buy a cylcocross bike. And, as a testament to the powers of my impulsivity, about 6 days later I had this. Holla!

Scope the custom front hanger. It uses an ultra light Surly hanger, and is attached to the stem using the thin steel bands for mounting pipes. It's ugly, but this way I don't have to use a negative 150 degree stem to get my bars to the right height.

Happy 2011!
I happened to catch a ferry on New Years eve from Bainbridge island into Seattle, and everyone on board was all smiles. Dressed up, pre-drinking and so excited for the new year. I got excited right along with them, and now everything about 2011 has been on a high note and I think there's everything in the world in store for all of us. I bet Rob Brezney would agree.
To start off on the right foot, here's a late post to begin the new year.. Some random pictures at the end of fall quarter in Corvallis, and from the trip I took through Bend and down to northern California afterwards.

to meet up with Craig and Brian who drove down from Seattle to race in the cyclocross nationals. This is the night before the race. They'd raced the time trial that day, and Brian had gotten 6th. Afterwards they spent about 100 dollars at the Deschutes brewery, followed by more beers and pints of ice cream in the Days Inn hot tub.

This is all the pictures I have, cause the other half's on film. I'll spoil the ending though. US Olympian Adam Craig showed up and won everything by about a minute. Brian came in 17th, which is awesome, since everyone was riding at unreal speeds. Old Flat Tire Mcgee, Craig, flatted out right at the start of the second lap. But, last weekend, beat the guy who ended up coming in second at Nationals. Who knows what would've happened. It racing.
All the riders were great though. Everyone was going for it, and all the races were exciting to watch.

After the race ended, I left Bend and took the van for a drive.

After 2 years of intensely nerding out in photo school, I've slowly moved backwards in camera technology. I'm now using a plastic camera that you wind by hand, something you might have gotten 10 years ago by sending in 10 UPC codes from your favorite cereal.

After leaving Seattle on my way to California, I stopped at the Nisqually Indian reservation to stock up on the fun kinds of fireworks you can't buy in the city.

How to make a camera bag in many difficult steps

Instead of paying 50 or 60 bucks for a ready-made, padded camera bag, I spent the same amount plus about 10-12 hours and made my own. I started with an old army bag that you can get at every surplus store in the world.
*Not shown: I removed about 2 pounds of weird tabs, loops and hooks from the thing to clean it up a bit before getting started.

First step was sewing this webbing and clip to the base. (to hold the front flap closed)

Too bad my sewing machine suddenly died. Tried to fix it but that was it.

Sad. I've had that thing for a long time. We sewed some pretty retarded things together over the years.

Anyway, this is the next evening. I went to the thrift store that day and bought this Sears model. Actually, if you can find one of these 70's or 80's models, the mechanics are really well made and much more durable than the cheap plastic stuff most companies are putting out nowadays. Plus, it was only 30 bucks.

The pocket for the front flap

Everything all together. If you look at the bottom of the pocket you can see the other end of the clip. I tucked it in there as I was sewing the front flap and pocket material together.

A pocket on the body of the bag.. Doye.

And some velcro. Again, doye.

Forgot to mention this step- hope you're not sewing along as you read this.. The first thing I did was to sew velcro onto the inside of the front flap. Can't do that shit after you sewed the pocket on..

Damn, here's something else that I didn't take incremental photos of. Sewed this pocket on the side. The pocket is just a rectangular piece of cordura, sewn down the sides and then folded onto itself at the bottom. Then a flap with velcro. I like this style of pocket, and blatantly stole the idea from Cory at Dank Bags, because it allows you to tuck the flap into the pocket so you can get things in and out faster, if needed.

Then I measured the inside of the bag and cut out pieces of foam in the appropriate dimensions.

Then I cut out a big piece of cordura (that I also measured out. Can't just be eye-balling stuff or by the end nothing with match up, it will look insanely shitty and you will hate yourself for all the work you've put in with crap to show for it. That's been my experience at least) Anyway, I sewed a long strip of velcro on the cordura (that you can't see, unfortunately) folded the cordura in half and sewed each of the foam pads into it.

Then sewed the ends together to make the padded walls of the bag.

This is the foam and material for the base. Pretty self-explanatory.

This is right after I sewed the base onto the wall-padding. As you can see, I sewed it so that all the seams are on the outside. That's because a.) it's way easier that way. b.) I'm planning to sew this padding into the army bag, so they'll never be seen anyway. If you want your bag to be removable and for all the seams to be hidden, all I can say is good luck with that.

One final piece. A padded divider block with velcro on the sides.

Stuff the lining into the bag, and sew around the top.

Done. Well, except for the sewing on the shoulder strap, but whatevs, I'm over it.
